About this practice packet

Decimal place value is the foundation students need before adding, subtracting, multiplying, or comparing decimals with confidence. This packet sequences practice from the most concrete skill – naming the digit in a specific place – through value, expanded form, comparison, and ordering, then closes with three word problems that ask students to apply all of those skills together.

The reference box on page 1 introduces the tenths, hundredths, and thousandths places using the example 4.327. Students see the 4 in the ones place worth 4, the 3 in the tenths place worth 0.3, the 2 in the hundredths place worth 0.02, and the 7 in the thousandths place worth 0.007, with the expanded form 4 + 0.3 + 0.02 + 0.007 spelled out. Every assessed item in the packet uses different numbers.

Section A asks students to identify which digit is in a named place (tenths, hundredths, or thousandths) across eighteen short prompts. Section B asks for the value of a specific digit – the bridge from naming a place to writing its decimal value. Section C is expanded-form practice: students rewrite each number as a sum of place-value pieces. Section D is the compare-with-signs section, including pairs that look different at the symbol level but are actually equal (for example, 0.7 and 0.70). Section E is ordering: four sets of four decimals each that must be arranged from least to greatest. Section F closes with three word problems that exercise place-value naming, ordering, and a common student error in expanded form.

The full answer key on page 6 lists every assessed item in section order. The Section D and Section E entries show the comparison or order in full so students or aides can spot-check both the answer and the reasoning.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud as a whole-class warm-up and unpack 4.327 place-by-place on the board.

Have students complete Section A independently as a 5-minute warm-up; review answers together before moving on.

Use Sections B and C for guided practice in pairs – have one student write the value while the other narrates the place name.

Assign Section D as independent practice; circulate to catch students who think more digits means greater value (a common decimal misconception).

Use Section E to extend the strongest students into ordering work while others finish.

Finish with Section F as a homework or exit-ticket; problem 61 in particular surfaces a common expanded-form error worth discussing as a class.

Use the answer key on page 6 for student self-check, small-group review, or aide spot-check.
