Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Counting mixed coins is the first place students put addition fluency to work in a real-world context. The page-1 reference box names every coin value and gives the strategy in one line: count the biggest coins first, then add the smaller coins. Students practice the strategy on 20 mixed items.

This worksheet uses one-letter coin labels (P, N, D, Q, H) instead of photo-realistic coin images. That keeps the print low-ink, prevents confusion about which side of the coin is shown, and makes the worksheet usable on any printer.

Page 1 covers mixed sets under $1.00 and single-coin-type sets. Page 2 covers totals over $1.00 (so students see the dollar-form notation $1.10) and four short word problems. Page 3 is a complete answer key with the breakdown for every item.

How to Use This Lesson

Warm up with the reference box – call out coin names and have students chorus values.

Use Sections A and B as a fluency pair before page 2.

Model item 12 on the board to introduce dollar-form notation.

Use Section D word problems for partner work or homework.

Pair with a bag of plastic coins for tactile learners.
