Understanding Congruent Figures
Two figures are congruent when they have the same shape and size. Corresponding sides are equal in length and corresponding angles are equal in measure. The lesson introduces congruence notation (≅) and shows students how to match corresponding parts of congruent polygons.
The four-page lesson walks through identifying congruent figures, labeling corresponding parts, and applying congruence to triangles and other polygons. Students complete practice problems and check their work using the included answer key.
How to Use This Lesson
1. Introduce the definition of congruence and congruence notation (pages 1–2). Use visual examples to show matching shapes.
2. Work through identifying corresponding sides and angles together (pages 2–3). Practice writing congruence statements.
3. Assign the practice problems (page 3) independently. Review answers using the key on page 4.
