About this worksheet
Comparing two multi-digit numbers is a foundational place-value skill that supports rounding, ordering, and estimation – and one of the most common student mistakes is to compare the wrong place first or to be tricked by a longer digit string. This worksheet drills the canonical procedure: line up the digits by place, start at the LEFT (highest) place, and walk right only when the digits match. The reference box on page 1 states the rule, shows the three symbols and how to read them aloud, and walks through two worked examples that highlight both the easy case (different at the highest place) and the trickier case (same at the top, decide further right).
Section A on page 1 gives students 12 number pairs in a 2-column layout (6 rows). The pairs deliberately mix the three cases: clearly different at the highest place (215 vs 251), a digit-swap trap (5,109 vs 5,019 – same thousands, decide at hundreds), identical numbers (3,742 = 3,742), zero-padding traps (40,205 vs 40,250), and 5-digit pairs where the answer hinges on the tens place. Students write <, >, or = in the blank between the two numbers.
Section B on page 2 takes the same procedure into 4 word problems with show-your-work boxes. Item 13 (1,452 vs 1,524 stadium fans) is a one-step compare with a clear answer. Item 14 (a 2,605 vs 2,650 allowance comparison) asks ‘how do you know’ – students cite the place. Item 15 introduces ORDERING (three city populations LEAST to GREATEST), which extends compare to a sort. Item 16 is a misconception check – a student says 18,400 < 18,040 because '40 is more than 4'; the student answer asks why that reasoning is wrong.
Page 3 is a complete answer key. Section A is a 2-column grid of symbols. Section B answers state the comparison conclusion plus a one-clause reason (e.g., ‘Mia. 2,650 > 2,605 (tens 5 > 0)’) so students can self-check both the answer and the place-value reasoning. The reference box at the top of page 1 uses two worked examples (348 vs 472 – different at hundreds; 6,295 vs 6,257 – same at thousands and hundreds, decide at tens) whose number pairs are NOT reused in any Section A or Section B item.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and have students chant the procedure: ‘line up, start LEFT, move right only when they match.’
Work Section A item 1 together: 215 vs 251. Hundreds 2 = 2; tens 1 < 5, so 215 < 251. Make sure students draw the symbol with its wide end opening toward 251.
Walk students through item 4 (5,109 vs 5,019), the easiest place-value trap. Thousands match (5 = 5); hundreds 1 > 0, so 5,109 > 5,019. The 9 in the ones is a distraction.
Assign the rest of Section A independently or in pairs.
Demonstrate Section B item 15 (ordering three populations) since ordering is new for some students. Compare two at a time, then sort.
Use Section B item 16 (the misconception check) for whole-class discussion: WHY is the student wrong? Because place value tells us 400 > 040, even though the digit 4 appears in both.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or aide spot-check.
