About this worksheet
Students who can compare decimals reliably need three durable habits: line up the decimal point, ignore trailing zeros, and remember that more digits does not mean bigger. This worksheet drills each habit in a separate section so the rule the student is applying is always clear. Section A is straight same-place-value comparison; Section B targets the trailing-zero pitfall directly; Section C asks students to generate a decimal between two given decimals, which forces them to think about decimal density rather than just symbol selection.
A reference box at the top of page 1 previews each rule with one short example: 0.6 vs 0.58 for left-to-right comparison, 0.20 = 0.2 for trailing zeros, and 1.3 > 1.29 for the more-digits pitfall. The reference decimals are deliberately different from every assessed decimal so the reference teaches the rule without giving away any answers.
Page 2 adds two ordering sections (least to greatest and greatest to least) plus four short word problems that use real-world decimals: running times in hundredths of a second, rainfall in inches, prices in dollars and cents, and weights to the thousandth of a gram. Page 3 is a complete answer key with the comparison line for every word-problem item.
How to Use This Lesson
Warm up by reading the three rules aloud and modeling the 1.3 vs 1.29 example.
Use Section A as a 5-minute fluency check (10 same-place-value comparisons).
Use Sections B and C together as guided practice on trailing zeros and decimal density.
Use Sections D and E for pair-share ordering work and have students explain the first and last positions.
Use Section F (word problems) as a 10-minute exit ticket.
Use the answer key on page 3 for student self-check or aide spot-check.
