Lesson Overview
Simplifying Expressions by Combining Like Terms
Like terms share the same variable parts — the numbers can differ, but everything else must match exactly. To simplify an expression, identify the like terms and combine them using addition or subtraction. The sign in front of each term determines whether it is added or subtracted.
The seven-page lesson walks students through the definition of like terms, the sign rule, and the simplification process with guided examples on the board. Students then complete 25 practice problems, including multi-variable expressions. The answer key on page 7 covers all 25 problems.
How to Use This Lesson
1. Introduce like terms: definition, examples, and the sign rule (pages 1–2). Write examples on the board and have students identify the like terms.
2. Work through simplification examples together (pages 3–4). Demonstrate circling or underlining like terms as a strategy.
3. Continue with more complex multi-variable examples (pages 4–5). Allow time for student questions.
4. Assign the 25 practice problems (page 6) independently. Review answers using the key on page 7.
