What This Lesson Teaches

Students learn the betweenness rule: when point C lies between collinear points A and B, the measure of segment AC plus the measure of segment CB equals the measure of segment AB. The lesson uses concrete numeric examples first – AC = 4.5 mm and CB = 3.7 mm gives AB = 8.2 mm.

Once the rule is concrete, the lesson moves into algebraic application: one of the segment lengths is given as an expression like 4x, and students solve for the unknown to find the missing measure. This bridges geometry vocabulary (collinear, congruent, segment) with one-variable algebra.

Common Student Mistakes to Watch For

  • Adding when they should subtract – if AB and AC are given, students need AB – AC = CB, not addition
  • Forgetting the betweenness condition – the rule only applies when C is between A and B; if C is outside the segment, the equation is different
  • Solving for x but stopping there – x is rarely the answer the question asks for; students must substitute back
  • Dropping units in the final answer – require 8.2 mm, not just 8.2
  • Mixing up congruent with equal – segments are congruent; their measures are equal
