About this worksheet

Area of a rectangle is the entry point for every formula students will meet later in geometry: Area = length x width. The cognitive moves are short – multiply two side lengths, label the answer in SQUARE units – but the worksheet also covers the two trickier extensions that grade-5 standards expect: finding a missing dimension when the area is known (divide instead of multiply), and finding the area of a composite L-shape by splitting it into two simpler rectangles and adding.

The reference box at the top of page 1 covers all three skills with explicit worked examples. The forward direction uses a 7 ft by 4 ft rectangle to show 7 x 4 = 28 sq ft. The reverse direction uses a 24 sq cm rectangle with width 3 cm to show 24 divided by 3 = 8 cm. The composite paragraph names the SPLIT-AND-ADD strategy for L-shapes (and the SUBTRACT alternative when a chunk is cut out). The (7, 4) operand pair and the (24, 3) operand pair both do NOT appear in any assessed item.

Section A on page 1 has 6 forward-direction items in a 2-column layout: rectangles with lengths and widths ranging from (3, 2) to (12, 7), plus one square (side 5) to surface the special case that a square IS a rectangle and the formula still applies. Every item shows units (cm, ft, in, m) so students get practice writing ‘sq cm’ / ‘sq ft’ / ‘sq in’ / ‘sq m’ rather than just numbers.

Section B on page 2 has 4 multi-step word problems with work boxes (1.05in): a 45 sq ft garden with length 9 (missing width = 5), a 60 sq cm rug with width 5 (missing length = 12), a 36 sq in square (missing side = 6), and an L-shaped patio made of two rectangles (6×4 + 3×2 = 24 + 6 = 30 sq ft). Page 3 is a complete answer key with the arithmetic shown for each Section B problem.

How to Use This Lesson

Project the page-1 reference box and read the area formula out loud: Area = length x width. Anchor ‘square units’ as the labeling rule.

Walk through the (7, 4) forward example together: 7 x 4 = 28 sq ft.

Walk through the (24, 3) reverse example: when area is known but one side is missing, divide. 24 divided by 3 = 8 cm.

Work Section A item 1 (length 8 cm, width 5 cm) together; have students label the answer ‘sq cm’, not just ’40’.

Walk through Section A item 6 (square with side 5 in) since the special case sometimes confuses students; remind them a square is also a rectangle and the formula works.

Assign the rest of Section A independently or with a partner.

Read Section B item 7 (garden area 45 sq ft, length 9, find width) together; show the rearrangement to division.

Use Section B item 10 (L-shaped patio) as a closing whole-class example – draw the L on the board and label the two rectangles before splitting.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or aide spot-check.
