About this worksheet
Understanding AM and PM is a conceptual hurdle for early learners because a clock face alone does not distinguish between the two halves of the day. This worksheet builds that distinction through context-first practice: Section A pairs each clock visual with a real-world situation — breakfast, bedtime, school starts, lunchtime — so students learn to connect the position of the hands to a time of day they already know from lived experience.
Section B shifts to a fill-in format where students supply AM or PM for twelve everyday sentences. The items are carefully sequenced to include edge cases that trip up many students: noon (12:15 PM), midnight (12:00 AM), and ambiguous times like 8:00 and 6:00 that appear in both halves of the day depending on context. Clue words — morning, evening, dinner, bedtime, recess — are embedded in each sentence to reward careful reading.
Section C presents three word problems that require students to reason across the AM/PM boundary. Item 19 asks students to add 14 hours to a morning wake time and land correctly in PM; item 20 requires computing the span from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM; item 21 asks for the elapsed minutes of an afternoon practice session. A reference box at the top of page 1 anchors the rule with a concrete 7:30 AM / 7:30 PM contrast and a list of everyday clue words students can scan while working.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and ask students to name one morning activity and one evening activity to anchor the AM/PM concept before touching the worksheet.
Model item 1 in Section A (7:00, Breakfast) as a class, discussing why the context clue points to AM even though a 7:00 clock looks identical for morning and evening.
Have students complete Section A independently or in pairs, then review answers and discuss any items where students chose the wrong period.
Work through two or three Section B items together to model how to look for the clue word in each sentence, then let students finish the section.
Use the answer key on page 3 for student self-check; use item 20 (9:00 AM to 8:00 PM = 11 hours) as a class extension discussion about why the answer is not 1 hour.
