About this worksheet

Real word problems aren’t just ‘add these two numbers.’ This worksheet pushes students past the single-operation trap by mixing five problem types across four student pages – single-step addition, single-step subtraction, two-step problems that change operation mid-problem, compare problems that test ‘how many more’ versus ‘how many fewer,’ and a final set that asks students to recognize missing or extra information before solving.

The top of page 1 lists a 4-step problem-solving plan (read, underline, circle, decide) followed by one small worked example. The example numbers and context are deliberately different from every assessed item so the reference teaches the strategy without giving away an answer.

All 22 items use two- and three-digit whole numbers; every answer is a non-negative whole number. Every problem is original and was independently recomputed for the answer key on page 5.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the 4-step reference box aloud as a whole-class warm-up.

Use Sections A and B in class to spot students who reach for the wrong operation.

Use Section C (two-step) for partner work, with one student narrating each step.

Use Section D (compare problems) as a checkpoint for students who add when the question asks ‘how many fewer.’

Use Section E (extra/missing information) as a 5-minute closer or exit ticket.
