Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

By second and third grade, students should be reading dollar-and-cent amounts as numbers, not as coins. This worksheet shifts the work from counting coins to lining up decimal points, and practices the same skill in five formats so the algorithm becomes durable across contexts.

The reference box at the top of page 1 shows two short worked examples: one that simply lines up the decimal points (no regrouping) and one that crosses the dollar boundary (100 cents equals one dollar). The example amounts and sums are deliberately different from every assessed item on the worksheet so the reference teaches the rule without revealing any answers.

Page 1 covers cents under one dollar, dollar-and-cent sums with no regrouping, and dollar-and-cent sums with regrouping. Page 2 adds three-addend sums, two ‘total cost’ mini-tables (lunch tray and school supplies), and four classroom-realistic word problems. Page 3 is a complete answer key that shows the number sentence for every word-problem item.

How to Use This Lesson

Warm up by reading the reference box aloud and modeling the regrouping example with a carried 1 above the dollars column.

Use Section A (cents-only sums) as a quick warm-up before introducing the dollar-and-cent form.

Use Sections B and C as guided practice – Section B is a no-regrouping baseline, Section C deliberately mixes in sums that cross 100 cents.

Use Sections D (three-addend) and E (total-cost tables) for independent practice, homework, or partner work.

Use Section F (word problems) as a 5-minute exit ticket; the answer key shows the number sentence so students can self-check the setup.
