About this worksheet
Adding fractions with like denominators is the first taste of fraction arithmetic that elementary students reach. The rule is simple and stays the same at every grade level: add the numerators, keep the denominator. This worksheet sequences practice from a visual identification warm-up to small-denominator computation to larger-denominator computation, then closes with three word problems.
The reference box on page 1 walks through the rule using the example 2/6 + 3/6. Students see that 2 + 3 = 5 in the numerator and that the denominator 6 stays the same, producing 5/6. The same procedure scales from thirds through twelfths.
Section A is a fluency warm-up that asks students to identify the fraction shown by a shaded fraction-bar. This grounds the addition that follows in a visual model — students see what ‘three-fifths’ or ‘five-eighths’ looks like before they add numerators on paper. Section B presents eight horizontal addition problems with small denominators (thirds, fourths, fifths, sevenths, eighths). Section C extends to larger denominators (ninths, tenths, twelfths), exercising the same procedure with bigger numbers. Section D closes with three word problems set in classroom or everyday contexts.
The answer key on page 3 lists every assessed item in section order. The Section B, C, and D answers show the full equation; entries where the sum simplifies to a friendlier fraction include the simplified form in parentheses (e.g. 2/4 simplifies to 1/2) so students learn to recognize equivalent fractions without being penalized for not simplifying.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud as a whole-class warm-up. On the board, draw two fraction bars showing 2/6 and 3/6 stacked vertically, then a third bar showing the sum 5/6.
Have students complete Section A independently as a 3-minute fluency check; review answers together before moving on.
Use Section B for guided practice in pairs – have one student state the numerators while the other writes the equation.
Assign Section C as independent practice; circulate to catch students who add the denominators together (a common error this section is designed to surface).
Finish with Section D as a homework or exit-ticket; problem 22 demonstrates a sum that simplifies, which is a teachable equivalence moment.
