About this worksheet
Absolute value is the distance a number is from zero on a number line, so it is never negative. This worksheet helps students read the absolute value bars, evaluate whole-number and integer expressions, and connect the idea to real situations like depth below sea level and temperature.
The reference box and Section A are on page 1. The reference box explains distance from zero with two worked examples and notes that opposite numbers share the same absolute value. Section A has six expressions to evaluate. Section B on page 2 has four word problems about opposites, a diver’s depth, comparing absolute values, and temperature.
Page 3 is a complete answer key with every value and the reasoning for each word problem. The worksheet pairs well with the Adding and Subtracting Integers and Comparing Numbers worksheets.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box and review what distance from zero means.
Evaluate the six expressions in Section A on page 1.
Solve the four word problems in Section B on page 2, showing work.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check.
Pair with the Adding and Subtracting Integers Worksheet.
