Materials

  • Place Value to Hundreds Worksheet — one copy per pair

  • A large set of small countable objects (beans, cubes, or counters) — at least 40 per pair
  • Rubber bands or small cups, to physically bundle groups of ten
  • A simple two-column mat or chart labeled 'tens' and 'ones', one per pair

Vocabulary

  • Digit — one single number symbol, like the 2 or the 4 in 24
  • Tens — a group of exactly ten ones, bundled together
  • Ones — single, un-grouped objects, fewer than ten
  • Two-digit number — a number written with two digits, from 10 to 99
  • Regroup — to trade ten ones for one ten, or one ten for ten ones

Preparation

Count out enough small objects (beans, cubes, or counters) in advance so every pair has at least 30-40 to work with — running out mid-lesson breaks the pacing.

Have rubber bands or small cups ready so a group of ten can be physically bundled and stays bundled once counted, rather than getting mixed back into the loose pile.

Draw or print a simple two-column mat, labeled "tens" and "ones", for the demonstration and one per pair.

Warm-Up

4 minutes. Spill out a big loose pile of about 40 objects. Ask the class: if I count this whole pile one at a time, would that be fast or slow? Could I lose my place?

Count a few objects out loud slowly, one at a time, to make the point concrete — then stop partway and ask if anyone is still sure exactly how many you’ve counted so far.

Say plainly where the lesson is going: today they learn a faster, more accurate way to count a big pile — by grouping it into tens first.

Direct Instruction

9 minutes. Model bundling: count out exactly ten objects, bundle them with a rubber band, and say "this bundle is worth ten, all by itself — I never have to count these ten one at a time again."

Keep bundling from the pile until no more full groups of ten remain, then place every bundle on the "tens" side of the mat and every leftover loose object on the "ones" side.

Count the total the fast way: count the bundles first by tens ("10, 20, 30"), then add the leftover ones one at a time ("…31, 32, 33"). Point out this is much faster than counting the whole original pile one at a time.

Write the resulting two-digit number (33) and point at each digit separately: "this 3 means 3 tens, or 30", then "this 3 means 3 ones" — the exact same digit shape, meaning something completely different depending on where it sits.

Do a second example with a different bundle-and-leftover count, having the class say each number aloud together as bundles and ones are added to the mat.

Guided Practice

8 minutes. Pairs get their own pile of about 30-40 objects, rubber bands or cups, and a tens/ones mat.

Pairs bundle their pile into tens and ones, place the bundles and loose ones correctly on the mat, then say the resulting two-digit number out loud together.

Circulate with one question: how many tens do you have, and how many ones?

Pairs then start the Place Value to Hundreds worksheet together.

Independent Practice

5 minutes. Students complete the Place Value to Hundreds worksheet.

Add one hands-on check: given a number card (for example, 27), build it on the mat with bundles and loose ones before writing the answer.

Assessment

2 minutes. Exit ticket. Show a two-digit number, such as 42. Ask: how many tens? How many ones?

Closure

2 minutes. Point at the mat one final time. Close on the rule: every two-digit number is really just some tens and some ones bundled together — the FIRST digit says how many tens, the SECOND digit says how many ones.

Differentiation and Accommodations

  • Extra support: work only with numbers under 20 today (one bundle of ten plus a few ones), and save two-bundle numbers like 33 for a second lesson.
  • Extension: challenge a student to build the SAME total two different ways — for example, 23 as 2 tens and 3 ones, then ask if there’s any other way to make 23 using only tens and ones (there isn’t, which is itself worth naming).
  • Common difficulty: a student who bundles ten correctly but then re-counts the bundle one object at a time anyway. Remind them directly: once it’s bundled, it’s worth ten — count the BUNDLE, not what’s inside it.
  • Watch for: a student who can build a number with objects but reverses the digits when writing it (writing 42 as 24). Have them point at the tens pile while saying the tens digit, and the ones pile while saying the ones digit, before writing either one.

Extension Activities
