Telling Time to Five Minutes
A 45-minute math lesson that treats the clock face as two scales printed on top of each other, then teaches students to read the minute hand by counting fives around the circle rather than by reading the numeral it points at.

Preparation
Set the demonstration clock to a time that makes the trap visible before the class walks in — 2:20 is the one to use, because the minute hand sits on the 4 and the hour hand sits between the 2 and the 3. Almost every wrong answer a class can give is available on that one face.
Have the paper clocks assembled in advance if your class is at the younger end. The split pin takes longer than you think and it is not what the lesson is teaching.
Write the two scales on the board as two separate lists before the lesson, and leave a gap between them:
- Short hand: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 — hours
- Long hand: 5 10 15 20 25 30 35 40 45 50 55 60 — minutes
Students should see the second row before they are asked to use it. The number 20 appearing under the numeral 4 is the fact the whole lesson rests on, and it is worth more as something they read off a board than as something they are told mid-explanation.
Warm-Up
5 minutes. Skip-count by fives around the room to sixty, one student per number, and write the count on the board as it goes. Do it twice so it is fast the second time.
Then point at the demonstration clock, still showing 2:20, and ask what time it is. Take every answer without correcting any of them. You will get 2:20, 2:4, 4:20 and often 2:2, and each of those is a different confusion worth having in the open.
Say only that the class does not yet agree, that all of these answers come from reading the same clock, and that by the end of the lesson they will be able to say which one is right and why the others are the mistakes people actually make.
Direct Instruction
12 minutes. Start by separating the hands, because everything downstream depends on it. Take the minute hand off the demonstration clock, or hold a finger over it, and move only the hour hand. Ask what changes. Then do the reverse.
Name what they saw: the short hand tells you the hour, the long hand tells you the minutes, and they do not mean the same thing even when they point at the same number.
Now make the second scale visible. Go round the clock face writing the minute value beside each numeral — 5 beside the 1, 10 beside the 2, 15 beside the 3 — and have the class count with you. This is the move the lesson turns on. The minute numbers are not printed on any real clock, and until a student has seen them written on one, "the long hand is on the 4" has no path to "twenty minutes" at all.
Go back to 2:20 and read it together, slowly and in the right order: short hand first, which hour has it passed; then long hand, counting round by fives. Two. Five, ten, fifteen, twenty. Two twenty.
Then show the classic error deliberately. Read the same clock as "two-oh-four" and ask what went wrong. Someone will say you read the long hand like the short one. That is exactly right, and it is worth naming as the mistake to watch for rather than leaving it as something only wrong answers reveal.
Do three more together at 3:15, 7:45 and 11:05. The last one matters: at five past the hour students reach for "one" because the hand is on the 1, and it is the cleanest reminder that the numeral and the minutes are different scales.
Finish with the hour hand’s own trick. At 7:45 it is nearly touching the 8, and students will read it as eight. Ask which hour has actually finished. The hour hand tells you the hour you are in, not the one you are heading toward.
Guided Practice
13 minutes. Students write the minute values around their own paper clock in a different color from the printed numerals, so the two scales stay visibly separate on the object they are holding.
Then work in pairs, one showing and one reading, swapping every turn:
- Set your clock to a time and have your partner read it aloud.
- Say a time and have your partner set it.
- Both check by counting the fives out loud, pointing at each numeral.
Counting out loud is not padding. It is the only way you can hear, from across the room, which students are counting and which are guessing from the shape of the hands — and guessing from the shape works often enough at o’clock and half past to have gone unnoticed all year.
Circulate with one question: which hand did you read first? A student who reads the long hand first will usually get there anyway, but they are the ones who invert the answer under pressure.
Give the pairs who are secure the times that catch people out — 12:05, 6:55 and 1:30 — where the hour hand is at or near a boundary.
Independent Practice
10 minutes. Students work through a set of five-minute clock faces on their own, writing each time in digital form, then do the reverse for four given times by drawing the hands themselves.
Both directions are needed and the second one is the harder half. Reading a clock can survive a fuzzy idea of which hand is which, because the shapes are familiar; drawing the hands cannot, and a student who draws both hands the same length is telling you something the reading task would have hidden.

Assessment
3 minutes. Exit ticket, three items. Read one clock showing 4:35. Draw the hands for 9:20. Then: Your friend looks at a clock with the long hand on the 5 and says it is five minutes past. What would you tell them?
The third item is the one that reports whether the lesson landed. A student can get the first two right by pattern-matching familiar faces; only the third requires them to say out loud that the numeral and the minute count are two different things.
Closure
2 minutes. Put the clock back to 2:20, the same face the class disagreed about at the start, and take the answer again. Close on the sentence the lesson earns: the little hand says which hour, the big hand says how many minutes, and you find the minutes by counting fives — not by reading the number it points at.
Differentiation and Accommodations
- Extra support: stay on the hour and half hour and keep the minute values written on the clock. - Extension: move to time to the minute, where students count on in ones from the nearest five. Ask them to explain why counting from the nearest five beats counting all the way round from twelve — it is the same reasoning that makes them start at the biggest coin.
- Common difficulty: reading the hour hand as the number it is closest to. At 7:45 that gives eight. The fix is to ask which hour has finished rather than which number is nearer, and to sweep a finger backwards to the last numeral the hand has passed.
- Watch for: students who are fast and confident at o’clock, half past and quarter past, and stuck everywhere else. They have memorized three pictures rather than learned a method, and the tell is that they answer instantly or not at all. Put them on times like 4:25 and make them count aloud.
Extension Activities
The natural next step is matching the two kinds of clock face directly: digital clocks pairs each analog face with the digital time, which turns this lesson’s writing step into a sorting task younger students find easier to hold.
Once the reading is secure, AM and PM adds the half of telling time a clock face cannot show at all, and it is the piece students need before any schedule makes sense.
Keep a real clock in play all day. Ask the time at genuinely arbitrary moments — not on the hour — and let a different student answer each time. Five-minute reading becomes automatic through repetition in the room, not through another worksheet.
