Making Inferences: Reading Between the Lines
A 45-minute reading lesson that turns inferring into a move students can show their work on: find the clue in the text, name what you already know, and state the conclusion the author left unwritten.

Preparation
Display the Making Inferences poster where the class can see it for the whole lesson. Students will use the same frame repeatedly, and having it on the wall is what makes it available three weeks later during independent reading.
Write the frame on the board and leave it up:
- Text clue (what the author wrote) + What I know (from my own experience) = My inference
Choose a short passage students have not read for independent practice. It has to be unfamiliar. A passage the class already discussed lets students recall the answer instead of inferring it, and the two look the same on paper.
Warm-Up
5 minutes. Read this aloud and stop: “Maya pushed open the front door, dropped her bag, and slid down against the wall. Her uniform was streaked with mud and her medal was still around her neck.”
Ask two questions in this order. First: how does Maya feel? Students will answer at once — exhausted, happy, both. Second, and this is the real question: where does it say that?
It does not say it anywhere, and that is the discovery. The author never used the word tired or the word won. Students knew anyway, because they combined what was written with what they already know about mud, medals, and sliding down a wall. Name the move: that is an inference, and you make them constantly without noticing.
Direct Instruction
12 minutes. Introduce the frame on the board, then think aloud through two or three short passages. Model the full sequence out loud each time, including the part students skip:
- Read, and notice the detail the author bothered to include.
- Say the clue out loud and point at it: “the text says her medal was still around her neck.”
- Say the background knowledge out loud: “I know you get a medal when you place in a race.”
- State the inference: “so I think she won or came close.”
- Ask yourself the check: could someone reasonably disagree, and what in the text would they point at?
Then model a bad inference on purpose. Say something the text cannot support — “Maya’s team must have lost” — and walk through why it fails: there is no clue, only a feeling. Students need to see the difference between an inference and a guess demonstrated, because from the inside the two feel identical.
Be explicit that a good inference can still be wrong, and that a later page can overturn it. What makes it an inference is that it rests on evidence, not that it turns out true.
One wording to settle out loud, because a student will raise it: the poster defines an inference as a smart guess based on text clues and what you already know. That is the same idea in student-friendly words — but the whole lesson lives in the word smart, which here means backed by something you can point at. If it helps your class, say conclusion instead: a guess comes from nowhere, a conclusion comes from evidence.
Guided Practice
13 minutes. Students work the first section of the Inference with Short Passages Worksheet in pairs while you circulate. Require all three parts of the frame in writing, not just the conclusion:
- What do you think is happening or how does the character feel?
- Which exact words in the passage told you? Underline them.
- What did you already know that helped?
The underline is the whole discipline. Without it a class discussion turns into competing opinions with no way to settle them; with it, two students who disagree can put their evidence side by side and usually resolve it themselves.
When a pair produces an unsupported answer, resist correcting it. Ask which words they would point at, and let the absence do the work.
Independent Practice
10 minutes. Students finish the worksheet alone, then read the unfamiliar passage and record two inferences using the same three-part frame.
This step is where the skill either transfers or does not. Worksheet passages are short and every one of them is built around a single inference; a real text is longer, most of it is stated outright, and the student has to decide for themselves which moments call for reading between the lines. Expect this to be harder than the worksheet and say so in advance.
Assessment
5 minutes. Exit ticket: one short passage, one question. Students write the inference, quote the text clue, and name the background knowledge.
Score the three parts separately, because they fail differently. A student with a correct inference and no evidence is guessing well and will stall on an unfamiliar topic. A student who quotes the right line but draws an odd conclusion is reading carefully and reasoning loosely — the opposite problem, and it needs the opposite feedback.
Closure
3 minutes. Go back to Maya from the warm-up. Ask the class to state the clue, the knowledge, and the inference in that order, in one sentence. Close by pointing at the poster: authors leave things out on purpose, and this is how you fill them in without making things up.
Differentiation and Accommodations
- Extra support: give the inference and ask students to find the evidence for it. Working backwards is markedly easier than generating and justifying at once, and it still builds the habit of looking at the text rather than into the air.
- Extension: ask students to write a short paragraph that makes a reader infer something without ever stating it, then trade and see whether a partner lands on the intended conclusion. Writing the clue is much harder than reading it.
- Common difficulty: a student answers from personal experience and never returns to the page. The prompt that works is not “are you sure?” but “show me the words” — it points at the page instead of at their confidence.
- Watch for: students who infer well about feelings but not about causes. Inferring emotions is the friendlier entry point; cause-and-effect inference usually needs its own pass later.
Extension Activities
Keep the frame alive in read-aloud. Stopping once a day to ask “what do you think just happened, and what in the text makes you think so?” builds the habit far more reliably than a second worksheet does.
Prediction is the natural companion lesson: a prediction is an inference about what has not happened yet, and the making predictions worksheet uses the same evidence-first structure.
