Lesson Overview

What Are Verbs and Adverbs?

A verb tells what action is taking place in a sentence. There are three types: action verbs show activity (run, jump, listen); helping verbs assist the main verb in expressing tense or mood; and linking verbs connect the subject to the rest of the sentence. Linking and helping verbs do not show action — students should memorize the list: am, is, are, was, were, have, has, had, and others.

An adverb modifies or describes a verb. The key tip: identify the verb first, then ask In what way? to find the adverb. Part 1 of the worksheet asks students to underline verbs and highlight adverbs in 15 sentences. Part 2 is an open-ended exercise where students write their own sentences using given phrases. Answers for Part 2 will vary. The answer key covers Part 1.

How to Use This Lesson

1. Read the lesson on page 1 as a class. Review the three verb types and the list of linking and helping verbs. Discuss the adverb tip using the racecar example.

2. Complete Part 1 on page 2: underline all verbs and highlight all adverbs in each sentence. Review answers using the key on page 4.

3. Complete Part 2 on page 3: use each given phrase to write an original sentence that includes both a verb and an adverb. Remind students that answers will vary.
