Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Verb tense tells WHEN an action happens, and it is one of the most important grammar skills in elementary writing. Students who can recognize and switch tense write more consistent paragraphs and avoid the common past-to-present jumps that confuse a reader.

Section A is a quick 12-item label drill. Students label each verb past, present, or future. Section B raises the difficulty: each sentence shows a verb in one tense and a target tense in brackets, and students must rewrite the verb in the target tense.

Page 2 is a complete answer key in a compact two-column grid for quick spot-checking. The reference box on page 1 explains all three tenses with a short before/now/later example.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and ask students to say what they did yesterday (past), are doing now (present), and will do tomorrow (future).

Work Section A independently as a 4-5 minute warm-up.

Move to Section B and read item 13 together; show how to find the verb, drop the current ending, and rewrite it in the target tense.

Use the answer key on page 2 for self-check or aide spot-check.

Pair with the Action Verbs Worksheet or Helping Verbs Worksheet for additional verb practice.
