About this worksheet
When you write about events at the same time, you should keep your verbs in the same tense. An accidental shift, such as going from past to present, can confuse readers about when things happen. This worksheet helps students notice and fix tense shifts.
Section A on page 1 gives eight sentences – some with verbs in a consistent tense, some that shift partway through – and asks students to write consistent or shifts. The reference box teaches the idea with a ‘She opened the door’ example.
Section B on page 2 asks what consistent tense means, why shifting confuses readers, to fix a tense shift, and to write a consistent past-tense sentence. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds on verb tenses and revising.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and find the two verbs in the example.
Complete Section A independently – have students check whether both verbs share a tense.
Discuss how to fix a sentence that shifts tense.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check.
Pair with the Verb Tenses Worksheet or the Editing and Revising Worksheet.
