Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

A verb phrase is a main verb together with one or more helping (auxiliary) verbs, all working as the complete verb of a sentence. Helping verbs include forms of be, have, and do, plus modals like will, can, should, and must, and the main verb comes last. This worksheet has students find the whole verb phrase, not just one word.

The reference box and Section A are on page 1. Section A has eight sentences, and students write the complete verb phrase (helping verbs plus main verb) for each one. The reference box teaches the idea with different examples, so the eight items stay independent of the model.

Section B on page 2 has four short-response questions, including writing a sentence whose verb phrase has two helping verbs. Page 3 is a complete answer key. This worksheet is distinct from the Helping Verbs Worksheet (the auxiliary alone) and completes the phrase-type set with noun and prepositional phrases.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and point out the helping verbs in each example.

Complete Section A on page 1 independently, writing each verb phrase.

Discuss how the main verb always comes last.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check.

Pair with the Helping Verbs Worksheet or the Modal Verbs Worksheet.
