Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

A verb is transitive or intransitive depending on whether its action reaches a direct object. A transitive verb passes its action to a direct object that receives it (‘She kicked the ball’); an intransitive verb does not (‘The baby slept’). This worksheet teaches students to use the ‘what?’ or ‘whom?’ test to tell the two apart.

Section A on page 1 gives eight sentences and asks students to label the verb transitive or intransitive (for example, ‘Maria painted a mural’ is transitive, while ‘The old dog snored loudly’ is intransitive). The reference box defines both types with example verbs different from the eight Section A sentences.

Section B on page 2 is short-answer: students define each verb type, name the test question, and write their own transitive and intransitive sentences. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill builds on action verbs and on direct and indirect objects.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and model the ‘what/whom?’ test on one sentence.

Complete Section A independently – have students ask ‘does a direct object receive the action?’

Discuss Section B item 14 (why the same verb can be both) as a class.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.

Pair with the Action Verbs Worksheet or the Direct and Indirect Objects Worksheet.
