About this worksheet
A tag question is a short question added to the end of a statement to check that the listener agrees, such as ‘You’re coming, aren’t you?’ The rule is to flip the verb: a positive statement takes a negative tag, and a negative statement takes a positive tag. The tag repeats the statement’s helping verb, or do, does, or did, plus a pronoun. This worksheet helps students hear and form those tags correctly.
Section A on page 1 gives eight sentences with two tag choices, and students write the correct tag. The reference box teaches the flip-the-verb rule and shows a short Examples block with one positive-to-negative example and one negative-to-positive example, so the assessed sentences stay independent of the model.
Section B on page 2 asks students to define a tag question, state the rule for a positive statement, add a tag to a given statement, and write their own negative-statement sentence with a positive tag. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds on subject-verb agreement and helping verbs.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and practice flipping the verb in a few statements.
Complete Section A independently – have students underline the helping verb first.
Discuss how the pronoun in the tag must match the subject of the statement.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check.
Pair with the Subject-Verb Agreement Worksheet or the Helping Verbs Worksheet.
