About this worksheet
A subordinating conjunction joins a dependent clause to an independent (main) clause. A dependent clause cannot stand alone as a sentence, and the subordinating conjunction shows how it connects to the main idea – often by giving a reason, a time, or a condition. This worksheet teaches students to spot the subordinating conjunction in a sentence.
Section A gives eight sentences (We went home after the movie ended; If it snows, school will close) and asks students to write the subordinating conjunction in each. The reference box teaches the idea with ‘because’, ‘until’, and ‘although’, words not reused as Section A answers.
Section B asks students to explain what a subordinating conjunction does, define a dependent clause, write a sentence that begins with ‘Because’, and contrast a subordinating conjunction with a coordinating conjunction like ‘and’. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill builds toward writing complex sentences.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and stress that the dependent clause cannot stand alone.
Complete Section A independently – have students find the word that begins the clause that could not be its own sentence.
Work Section B item 11 together: write a complex sentence that begins with ‘Because’.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Complex Sentences Worksheet or the Conjunctions Worksheet for a clause mini-unit.
