Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

The subjunctive mood expresses something wished for, suggested, demanded, or imagined rather than something real. After ‘wish’ or a contrary-to-fact ‘if,’ English uses ‘were’ for every subject, and after demand, suggest, or insist, the verb in the ‘that’ clause takes its base form. This worksheet helps students hear and use those forms.

Section A on page 1 gives eight sentences with a choice of two verbs, and students write the correct subjunctive form. The reference box teaches both patterns and shows a short Examples block with an ‘If I were a bird’ wish example and a ‘judge demands that the witness tell the truth’ demand example, so the assessed sentences stay independent of the model.

Section B on page 2 asks what the subjunctive expresses, which form of ‘to be’ it uses, what form a verb takes after demand or insist, and to write a wish. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds on verb tenses and verb moods.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and say ‘If I were’ and ‘were’ for I, he, and she.

Complete Section A independently – have students underline ‘wish,’ ‘if,’ or the demand verb first.

Discuss why ‘were’ and the base form sound formal but are correct.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check.

Pair with the Verb Moods Worksheet or the Verb Tenses Worksheet.
