About this worksheet
Verbs fall into two broad categories. Action verbs describe things people or objects do, such as running, writing, or building. Stative verbs describe states or conditions — things that simply exist or are experienced, such as knowing, believing, or owning. Because stative verbs describe ongoing states rather than deliberate actions, they are not normally used in progressive tenses.
The reference box and Section A are on page 1. The reference teaches the action/stative distinction with clear examples of each type and explains why “I am knowing the answer” sounds wrong. Section A has eight verbs, and students write A for action or S for stative.
Section B on page 2 has four short-response questions, including writing an original stative verb sentence and correcting a common progressive-tense error. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers.
