About this worksheet
An infinitive is the word to plus a verb (to run, to think). A split infinitive puts a word – usually an adverb – between to and the verb, as in to quickly finish. Split infinitives are common and often fine, but in formal writing many writers move the adverb so the infinitive stays together. This worksheet builds the eye to spot the split.
The reference box and Section A are on page 1. Section A has eight sentences, and students write yes or no for whether the infinitive is split. The reference box teaches the idea with a split and an unsplit example, so the eight items stay independent of the model.
Section B on page 2 has four short-response questions, including fixing a split infinitive. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds on infinitives and adverbs.
