Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Every sentence does one of four jobs: it tells, asks, commands, or shows strong feeling. The end mark is the clue. Once students can hear those four jobs in their own reading and writing, their punctuation choices improve and their writing carries more voice.

Section A is a quick 12-item label drill. Students mark each sentence D (declarative), Q (question), C (command), or E (exclamation). Section B raises the difficulty: students write out the full sentence type (declarative, interrogative, imperative, or exclamatory), giving them practice with the formal terminology used on most standardized tests.

Page 2 is a complete answer key in a compact two-column grid for quick spot-checking. The reference box on page 1 introduces both the short labels (D/Q/C/E) and the formal sentence-type names with four model sentences.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and have students point out the end mark on each model sentence.

Work Section A independently as a 4-5 minute warm-up using the short labels D, Q, C, or E.

Move to Section B and remind students to write the full formal sentence type (declarative, interrogative, imperative, or exclamatory).

Use the answer key on page 2 for self-check or aide spot-check.

Pair with the Subject and Predicate Worksheet or Complete Sentences Worksheet for additional sentence-structure practice.
