About this worksheet
Rhetorical synthesis is the question type the digital SAT introduced and the one students find hardest. It gives a short set of notes and a goal, and asks which sentence does the job. Nearly every choice is factually accurate, so accuracy cannot separate them; only the goal can. This sheet is written in that digital format rather than the underlined-portion format used by the rest of the series, because this question type does not edit a sentence, it asks you to pick the right one.
The reference box on page 1 names the two ways a choice goes wrong, off-task and unsupported, followed by Part A, 8 short recall items. Part B and Part C each give one set of notes and five goals. Holding the notes fixed while the goal changes is a teaching choice, not the test’s: it isolates the only thing that decides the answer. The sheet says so where a student will read it.
Page 4 is a complete answer key. Each answer names the correct letter and gives the one-line reason it is correct, so a student working alone can see why rather than only what.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box and learn what off-task and unsupported mean.
Complete the 8 recall items in Part A on page 1.
For each item, read the goal BEFORE the notes and long before the choices.
Check every word of your choice against the notes; a choice that adds a fact the notes never state is wrong.
Check your work against the answer key on page 4 and read the reason for any item you missed.
