Lesson Overview
About this worksheet
This worksheet drills commas in the classic underlined-portion format: a sentence with one portion underlined and four alternatives, the first of which is always NO CHANGE. That is the shape the paper SAT used and the shape the ACT English test still uses. The digital SAT asks the same rules with a blank in a short passage instead, so what carries across is the rule rather than the packaging, and the reference box on page 1 says so on the sheet itself.
The reference box on page 1 explains the four jobs a comma does and the two places it never goes, followed by Part A, 8 short recall items on the terms. Part B and Part C hold 14 multiple-choice items in test format, numbered continuously with Part A.
Page 4 is a complete answer key. Each answer names the correct letter and gives the one-line reason it is correct, so a student working alone can see why rather than only what.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box and learn the rule before starting.
Complete the 8 recall items in Part A on page 1.
Work Parts B and C, 14 items in the underlined-portion format. Remember that NO CHANGE is sometimes the correct answer.
Check your work against the answer key on page 4 and read the reason for any item you missed.
