About this worksheet
Quotation marks are how a writer shows that a character is speaking. The rule has three parts that students must get right at the same time: quotation marks wrap the exact spoken words, a comma sets off the speaker tag, and the end mark stays inside the closing quotation mark. This worksheet drills all three parts together so students do not learn one in isolation.
Section A is an 8-item warm-up on page 1. Each sentence already has the speaker and the spoken line, but no quotation marks and no comma. Students rewrite each sentence on the line provided with the full set of marks. Section B on page 2 ramps up to longer dialogue: six sentences with no comma and no end mark at all, plus more complex speaker tags like Coach Park shouted and the librarian asked.
Page 3 is a complete answer key with full-row lines so each rewritten sentence prints cleanly. The reference box on page 1 shows one telling example and one question example so students can see how the comma and the end mark both land in the right place. Titles in quotation marks (poems, song titles) are intentionally left out so the worksheet stays focused on direct speech.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and trace the three parts of the rule with students: quotation marks around the speaker’s exact words, comma after the speaker tag, end mark INSIDE the closing quotation mark.
Work Section A together for the first two items so students see the full rewrite, then let them finish independently.
Move to Section B and read item 9 aloud; remind students that a question or exclamation inside the quotation keeps its end mark INSIDE the closing quote.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or aide spot-check.
