Why Punctuation and Grammar Matter
Punctuation marks are signals that help readers understand how a sentence is organized and how it should be read. A period ends a statement. A question mark ends a question. An exclamation point shows strong feeling. A comma separates items in a list or marks a pause. Without correct punctuation, even well-chosen words can be confusing.
Grammar rules — like capitalization, subject-verb agreement, and correct word choice — work alongside punctuation to make writing clear. For example, every sentence must begin with a capital letter, and proper nouns are always capitalized. Using the wrong word form (where instead of were, or their instead of they’re) can change the meaning of a sentence or make it hard to read.
Proofreading is the skill of carefully reviewing writing to find and fix these kinds of errors. Good writers do not rely on first drafts — they review their work with fresh eyes, checking for mistakes in punctuation, capitalization, spelling, and grammar before they consider a piece finished.
Common Punctuation and Grammar Errors
Some of the most common mistakes in student writing include: missing capital letters at the start of sentences; incorrect end punctuation (using a question mark where a period belongs, or vice versa); missing commas after introductory phrases or between items in a list; apostrophe errors in possessives and contractions; and confused homophones like their/there/they’re or its/it’s.
In this worksheet, students practice the skill of proofreading by reading a paragraph with intentional errors and rewriting it correctly. This kind of exercise builds attention to detail, reinforces grammar rules in context, and develops the habit of careful revision.
Regular practice with punctuation and grammar correction helps students become stronger writers and better readers. When students can identify errors in someone else’s writing, they become more likely to catch similar mistakes in their own work.
