About this worksheet

A proper adjective is an adjective made from a proper noun – the name of a specific place, person, or thing – and because it comes from a proper noun, it is always capitalized. America gives American, France gives French, and Japan gives Japanese. This worksheet teaches students to form proper adjectives and to capitalize them correctly.

Section A gives eight proper nouns with a noun to describe (France -> ___ bread) and asks students to write the proper adjective. The set uses several country names with different endings (-ish, -ian, -ese, -an) so students see the variety. The reference box teaches the rule with Spain-Spanish and Shakespeare examples not reused in the items.

Section B is short-answer. Students confirm proper adjectives are capitalized, form one from Spain, fix a lowercase proper adjective, trace ‘Hawaiian’ back to its proper noun, and judge whether ‘British’ is a proper adjective. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill connects parts of speech with capitalization.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and form a few proper adjectives from country names together.

Complete Section A independently – remind students every proper adjective gets a capital letter.

Work Section B item 11 together: fix ‘korean food’ to ‘Korean food.’

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.

Pair with the Capitalization Rules Worksheet or the Identifying Adjectives Worksheet for a mini-unit.
