Lesson Overview

Pronouns

A pronoun is a word used in place of a noun. Pronouns prevent writing from becoming repetitive: instead of writing a person’s name over and over, a writer uses he, she, they, or it. This lesson focuses on personal pronouns, which have both singular and plural forms. Singular personal pronouns include I, you, he, she, and it. Plural forms include we, you, and they.

Personal pronouns also change depending on their role in a sentence. Subjective pronouns (I, he, she, we, they) serve as the subject of a sentence. Objective pronouns (me, him, her, us, them) serve as the object of a verb or preposition. Students practice identifying which form is correct in context.

The four-page resource includes the lesson on pages 1–2 and a practice worksheet on page 3 where students identify pronouns and choose the correct form. Answer key is on page 4.

How to Use This Lesson

1. Present the lesson on pages 1–2. Introduce personal pronouns, explain why they replace nouns, and review singular vs. plural forms. Work through examples together on the board.

2. Introduce subjective and objective pronouns using example sentences. Have students generate their own examples to demonstrate understanding.

3. Distribute page 3 as the practice worksheet. Students identify pronouns and select the correct form. Review all answers using the key on page 4.
