About this worksheet
An antecedent is the noun a pronoun stands in for, and a pronoun must agree with its antecedent in two ways: number (singular or plural) and person. A singular antecedent like grandmother takes a singular pronoun (her); a plural antecedent like firefighters takes a plural pronoun (their). Getting that match right is one of the most common usage skills tested in upper elementary, and it is the foundation of clear writing.
Section A on page 1 gives students eight sentences, each with a blank and two pronoun choices in parentheses (her / their, his / its, she / they). The student writes the pronoun that agrees with the sentence’s antecedent on the answer line. The mix covers singular and plural antecedents, animal antecedents that take it/its, and a compound subject (Marcus and I) that takes our.
Section B on page 2 raises the difficulty: each of six sentences contains a pronoun that does NOT agree with its antecedent, and the student rewrites the sentence correctly. Items target the classic errors – a singular animal paired with their, the indefinite each girl paired with their, and a singular brother paired with their – so students practice fixing real agreement mistakes, not just spotting correct ones.
Page 3 is a complete answer key. Section A lists the agreeing pronoun for each sentence; Section B gives a corrected sample sentence for each item. The reference box at the top of page 1 defines antecedent, states the number-and-person rule, and shows a worked coach/players example that is not reused in any assessed item.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and define antecedent: the noun the pronoun replaces. Show the coach (singular -> she) and players (plural -> their) examples.
Work Section A item 1 together: grandmother is singular, so her agrees, not their. Have students name the antecedent before choosing.
Assign the rest of Section A independently. Remind students to find the antecedent first, then ask ‘one or more than one?’
Demonstrate Section B item 9 together: The dog wagged their tail -> dog is singular, so rewrite as its tail.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or aide spot-check; any rewrite that makes the pronoun agree counts.
