Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Prepositions are short words that tell us where, when, or how. Students who can spot prepositions in context are better at building clear sentences and at understanding the position and time relationships in what they read.

Section A drills 12 short prepositional phrases. Students circle the preposition (in, on, behind, above, between, and others) and write it on the line. Section B raises the difficulty by embedding the preposition inside a full sentence, so students have to read past the subject and verb to find the position or time word.

Page 2 is a complete answer key in a compact two-column grid for quick spot-checking. The reference box on page 1 lists fourteen common prepositions and shows three example sentences.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and have students act out one preposition (in, under, behind) with a book and a desk.

Work Section A independently as a 4-5 minute warm-up.

Move to Section B and read item 13 together; show how the preposition starts a phrase that tells where the squirrel went.

Use the answer key on page 2 for self-check or aide spot-check.

Pair with the Pronouns Worksheet or Conjunctions Worksheet for additional parts-of-speech practice.
