Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

A prepositional phrase is a preposition (in, on, under, to, with) plus the noun or pronoun that follows it, called the object, along with any words in between. The phrase begins with the preposition and ends with its object. This worksheet teaches students to spot the whole phrase, not just the preposition.

Section A gives eight sentences (the cat slept under the bed; we walked to the park) and asks students to write the prepositional phrase in each. The reference box teaches the skill with ‘in the morning’ and ‘across the wide river’ examples not reused in the items.

Section B asks students to use ‘over the bridge’ in a sentence, name what kind of word ends a prepositional phrase, write a phrase beginning with ‘between’, and pull a phrase out of their own sentence. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill builds toward identifying sentence parts and adding detail to writing.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and underline the preposition, then the object, in each example.

Complete Section A independently – have students find the preposition first.

Work Section B item 9 together: write a class sentence using ‘over the bridge’.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.

Pair with the Prepositions Worksheet or the Direct and Indirect Objects Worksheet for a sentence-parts mini-unit.
