About this worksheet

A linking verb connects the subject to a word that tells more about it. A predicate noun follows a linking verb and renames the subject, while a predicate adjective follows a linking verb and describes the subject. This worksheet helps students see how linking verbs work and tell the two kinds of subject complements apart.

Section A names the word after the linking verb in eight sentences (in ‘She is a teacher,’ the word ‘teacher’; in ‘The sky looks blue,’ the word ‘blue’) and asks whether it is a predicate noun or a predicate adjective. The reference box teaches the idea with ‘Maria is a nurse’ and ‘The dog is friendly’, sentences not reused in the items.

Section B asks students what each predicate word does to the subject, what kind of verb precedes it, and to write a sentence with a predicate adjective. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill builds toward understanding linking verbs and sentence structure.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and stress: renames the subject (noun) vs describes the subject (adjective).

Complete Section A independently – have students find the linking verb first, then the word after it.

Work Section B item 12 together: write a sentence with a predicate adjective.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.

Pair with the Linking Verbs Worksheet or the Direct and Indirect Objects Worksheet for a sentence-structure mini-unit.
