Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

A possessive pronoun shows that something belongs to someone, without an apostrophe. Some come before a noun (my book, their dog) and some stand alone (The book is mine; That bike is hers). This worksheet teaches both kinds and the important rule that possessive pronouns never use an apostrophe – ‘its’ means belonging to it, while ‘it’s’ means ‘it is.’

Section A gives eight sentences with two choices (my/mine, her/hers, our/ours) and asks students to write the correct possessive pronoun. The set mixes before-the-noun forms with stand-alone forms so students learn when each is used, plus the tricky its-versus-it’s. The reference box teaches the forms with its own examples not reused in the items.

Section B asks students to replace an underlined possessive phrase (Daniel’s coat; the children’s toys) with a possessive pronoun. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill builds clear writing and complements possessive nouns and subject-object pronouns.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and list the before-the-noun and stand-alone forms in two columns.

Complete Section A independently – have students ask whether a noun follows (use my/our) or not (use mine/ours).

Work Section B item 9 together: ‘That is Daniel’s coat’ becomes ‘That coat is his.’

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.

Pair with the Possessive Nouns Worksheet or the Subject and Object Pronouns Worksheet for a pronoun mini-unit.
