Possessive Nouns Worksheet

About this worksheet
A possessive noun shows that something belongs to someone or something. Forming the possessive correctly is one of the trickiest punctuation skills in elementary grammar because the apostrophe moves depending on whether the noun is singular, regular plural, or irregular plural. This worksheet practices all three rules side by side so students stop guessing where to put the apostrophe.
Section A on page 1 gives students 12 base nouns in a two-column grid. Students write each noun in its possessive form on the line. The 12 nouns mix singular nouns that take ‘s (teacher, Maya, brother, mouse, city), regular plural nouns that take only an apostrophe (birds, families, students, parents), and irregular plural nouns that take ‘s (women, men, people).
Section B on page 2 raises the difficulty: each of 6 sentences uses an of-phrase to show ownership (the hat OF MY SISTER, the lockers OF THE STUDENTS). Students rewrite the full sentence using a possessive noun in place of the of-phrase in a generous work box. The rewrite step forces students to use the possessive form inside a real sentence – where the place mistakes show up most.
Page 3 is a complete answer key. The Section A grid gives the possessive form only; Section B gives each full rewritten sentence.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and slow down on the three rules; use a hand to point to where the apostrophe goes (after the noun for singular and irregular, after the -s for regular plurals).
Work Section A item 1 together: teacher is singular, so add ‘s to make teacher’s. Item 2 birds is regular plural, so add only the apostrophe to make birds’.
Assign the rest of Section A independently or in pairs.
Demonstrate Section B item 13 together: ‘the hat OF MY SISTER’ becomes ‘my sister’s hat’. Move the owner in front and add ‘s.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or aide spot-check.
