Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

A phrase is a group of words that work together but does not have both a subject and a verb; a clause is a group of words that does have both. The quick test is to look for a subject (who or what) and a verb (the action or being word): if both are there, it is a clause. This worksheet gives students that test and lots of practice.

Section A on page 1 gives eight word groups and asks students to label each one a phrase or a clause. The reference box teaches the test with park and dog examples that are not reused in any item.

Section B on page 2 asks students for the difference, what a clause must have, and to write a phrase and a clause of their own. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds toward identifying independent and dependent clauses and building stronger sentences.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and apply the subject-and-verb test to each example.

Complete Section A independently – have students underline any subject and verb they find.

Work Section B item 11 together: write a phrase beginning with ‘under’.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check; Section B answers will vary.

Pair with the Independent and Dependent Clauses Worksheet or the Prepositional Phrases Worksheet.
