About this worksheet
A participle is a verb form used as an adjective – it describes a noun. A present participle ends in -ing and a past participle usually ends in -ed or -en. A participial phrase is a participle plus the words that go with it, and the whole phrase works together to describe a noun. This worksheet teaches students to find the participial phrase in a sentence.
Section A gives eight sentences (Smiling brightly, Maria opened the gift; The dog barking loudly scared the cat) and asks students to write the participial phrase in each. The reference box teaches the idea with ‘Running down the street’ and ‘Exhausted from the game’, phrases not reused as Section A answers.
Section B asks students to define a participial phrase, name the part of speech a participle works as, build a sentence from ‘Laughing loudly’, and explain how a participle differs from a gerund. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill builds toward understanding verbals and sentence variety.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and stress that a participle describes a noun, while a gerund is a noun.
Complete Section A independently – have students ask ‘which noun does this -ing or -ed phrase describe?’
Work Section B item 11 together: start a sentence with the participial phrase ‘Laughing loudly’.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
