About this worksheet
Parallel structure means that items joined in a list or pair use the same grammatical form – all -ing words, all nouns, or all verbs in the same tense. When the forms match, a sentence reads smoothly; when one item breaks the pattern, it sounds awkward. This worksheet teaches students to test a list for parallel form and fix it when it is not.
Section A gives eight sentences and asks students to write parallel or not parallel for each. The set mixes balanced lists (swam, hiked, camped) with faulty ones (smart, kind, and works hard). The reference box teaches the skill by fixing ‘reading, writing, and to draw’ to ‘reading, writing, and drawing’, an example not reused in the items.
Section B asks students to rewrite two faulty sentences so the items are parallel, explain why parallel form helps a reader, and write their own parallel list of -ing words. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill strengthens clear, polished writing.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and list the joined items in a column to test the form.
Complete Section A independently – have students stack the items and compare endings.
