Lesson Overview
Nouns
A noun names a person, place, or thing. In every sentence, the noun is the “who” or “what” the sentence is about. Students begin by brainstorming everything they can see in the classroom: desk, chair, teacher, pencil, book — most of these are nouns.
Proper nouns name a specific person or place and always begin with a capital letter: Abraham Lincoln, Main Street, Phoenix, Arizona. Pronouns stand in for nouns so writers do not have to repeat the same name: I, she, he, they, it. Singular nouns refer to one person or thing; plural nouns refer to more than one, usually formed by adding –s or –es.
The six-page set includes a two-page teacher lesson plan, a two-page student copy for note-taking, and a two-page practice worksheet with answer key. Students underline nouns in sentences and categorize them by type.
How to Use This Lesson
1. Use the teacher lesson plan (pages 1–2) to introduce nouns. Have students look around the classroom and list what they see, then sort items into “people, places, or things.” Introduce proper nouns and show how they differ from common nouns.
2. Distribute the student copy (pages 3–4) for guided note-taking. Review pronouns as a class and clarify the difference between singular and plural forms with additional examples.
3. Assign the worksheet (pages 5–6). Students underline nouns in each sentence. Review answers using the included answer key.
