Lesson Overview

What Are Nouns and Adjectives?

A noun names a person, place, thing, or idea. The key tip for students: the hardest type to identify is the idea noun — things like liberty, love, and justice that cannot be seen, heard, touched, tasted, or smelled. An adjective modifies a noun, answering questions like What kind? or Which one? For example, in Who was the first American president? the words first and American are adjectives that describe president.

Part 1 asks students to underline nouns and highlight adjectives in 15 sentences. Part 2 is an open-ended exercise: students expand simple sentences by adding descriptive nouns and adjectives. Answers for Part 2 will vary. The answer key covers Part 1 with all nouns and adjectives identified.
