About this worksheet
A noun clause is a dependent clause that acts as a noun – a subject, a direct object, or the word after a linking verb. It usually begins with that, what, who, whether, why, or how, and cannot stand alone. This worksheet teaches students to recognize a noun clause using the ‘something/it’ replacement test.
Section A on page 1 gives eight sentences and asks students to mark each noun clause or no noun clause (for example, ‘What she said surprised everyone’ contains a noun clause, while ‘The dog that barked all night is next door’ has a describing clause instead). The reference box defines a noun clause with examples different from the eight Section A sentences.
Section B on page 2 is short-answer: students define a noun clause, name jobs it can do, state the test word, and write their own. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill deepens the Independent and Dependent Clauses and Phrases and Clauses worksheets.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and model the ‘replace with it’ test on one sentence.
Complete Section A independently – have students ask ‘does this clause take the place of a noun?’
Discuss Section B item 13 (noun clause vs describing clause) as a class.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Independent and Dependent Clauses Worksheet or the Phrases and Clauses Worksheet.
