About this worksheet
Irregular verbs are the verbs that do not add -ed to make the past tense – the rule that elementary students learn first for regular verbs (walk -> walked) does not apply to run, go, eat, see, and dozens of other high-frequency verbs. Because there is no rule to apply, irregular verbs must be memorized. This worksheet targets twelve of the most common irregular verbs students meet in early-grade reading.
Section A on page 1 gives students 12 base-form verbs in a two-column grid; each blank holds just the past-tense form. The list mixes vowel-change verbs (run -> ran, sing -> sang, find -> found), -ought / -aught endings (buy -> bought, bring -> brought, teach -> taught, catch -> caught), and the everyday irregulars go -> went, make -> made, give -> gave, take -> took, write -> wrote.
Section B on page 2 raises the difficulty by 6 full sentences. The verb in each sentence is irregular and given in present tense; students rewrite the entire sentence with the verb in the past tense in a generous work box. The rewrite step forces students to read the past-tense form in context, which is where most agreement and tense mistakes show up.
Page 3 is a complete answer key in a compact format – the Section A grid lists past-tense forms only; Section B gives each full rewritten sentence.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and remind students that adding -ed does NOT work for these verbs – the past tense is a different word.
Work Section A item 1 together: ask ‘What is the past tense of run?’ (ran) and have students write it on the line.
Assign the rest of Section A independently or in pairs.
Demonstrate Section B item 13 together: read ‘I think about my trip,’ identify the irregular verb (think -> thought), and rewrite the full sentence.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or aide spot-check.
