About this worksheet
Most adjectives add -er and -est, or use more and most. A handful of the most common adjectives in English do neither — their comparative and superlative forms are different words entirely, and they have to be learned. That is the same argument the irregular verbs make: the rule breaks on precisely the words students use most.
Section A gives ten sentences, each naming an adjective in parentheses. The form is in the reference box, but the decision is not: the student has to work out from the sentence whether two things are being compared or a whole group. Between them the ten items use all ten irregular forms exactly once.
Section B is the error work. Each sentence carries a doubled or wrong form — bestest, more better, worser — and the student rewrites it. These are not careless mistakes; they come from applying a rule where it does not belong, which is why naming the rule and its limit works better than marking the word wrong.
