Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

In most sentences the subject comes first and the verb follows, but in an inverted sentence the verb comes before the subject. This happens in questions and in sentences that begin with ‘there,’ ‘here,’ or a place. The verb must still agree with the true subject, which sits after the verb, so ‘There are three books’ is correct, not ‘There is three books.’ This worksheet helps students find the subject and choose the right verb.

Section A on page 1 gives eight inverted sentences with two verb choices, and students write the verb that agrees. The reference box teaches how to find the true subject and shows a short Examples block with a there/here example and a question example, so the assessed sentences stay independent of the model.

Section B on page 2 asks students to define an inverted sentence, explain how to find the subject, choose a verb, and write their own inverted sentence with a plural subject. Page 3 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds on subject-verb agreement and subject and predicate.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and locate the subject after the verb in each example.

Complete Section A independently – have students point to the true subject first.

Discuss why ‘there’ and ‘here’ are never the subject of a sentence.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check.

Pair with the Subject-Verb Agreement Worksheet or the Subject and Predicate Worksheet.
