About this worksheet

An interjection is a word or short phrase that shows strong or sudden feeling – surprise, joy, pain, relief, or hesitation. Interjections are not really part of the main sentence; they just add emotion. They almost always come at the very beginning, and they are followed by either an exclamation mark (for strong feeling) or a comma (for mild feeling). The eighth part of speech in the traditional list, interjections are usually the most fun for second through fourth graders because the words themselves are dramatic – Wow!, Yikes!, Hurray!, Ouch!.

Section A on page 1 gives students 12 short sentences in a two-column grid. The student circles the interjection in each one. The mix uses 12 different common interjections (Yikes, Ouch, Hurray, Hmm, Oops, Whoa, Phew, Yay, Hey, Aha, Oh no, Ah) so students see a wide variety of feeling words. Four use exclamation marks (strong feeling: Yikes!, Hurray!, Whoa!, Yay!) and eight use commas (mild feeling), which previews Section B.

Section B on page 2 raises the difficulty: each of 6 items is a sentence with the interjection missing. The student writes an interjection that fits the feeling of the sentence, then decides whether the sentence needs a comma or exclamation mark. Multiple interjections can fit each item, so the answer key gives one sample plus a note about the right end punctuation.

Page 3 is a complete answer key. The Section A grid gives the one-word (or two-word) interjection; Section B gives a sample interjection plus a short parenthetical note explaining the feeling and the correct end punctuation. The reference box at the top of page 1 defines interjection, lists fourteen common ones, and shows two worked examples (one strong, one mild) using a generic zoo-trip context not reused in any assessed item.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and chant the list of common interjections – Wow, Oh, Hey, Ouch, Yikes, Oops. Demonstrate the difference between Wow! (strong surprise) and Oh, (mild realization).

Work Section A item 1 together: Yikes! That is a long line. The interjection is Yikes – circle it.

Assign the rest of Section A independently or in pairs. Remind students that interjections almost always come at the beginning of the sentence.

Demonstrate Section B item 13 together: ____, I forgot my lunch on the kitchen table. Ask students what feeling fits – mild dismay, so Oh no, (with a comma) works. Show that Yikes! (with an exclamation mark) would also work if the student wants to show stronger upset.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or aide spot-check; many interjections can fit each Section B item, so accept any reasonable choice with correct punctuation.
