About this worksheet
An infinitive is the word ‘to’ plus the base form of a verb, such as to run, to eat, or to think. An infinitive phrase is an infinitive plus the words that complete its meaning, and it can work as a noun, an adjective, or an adverb. This worksheet teaches students to find the infinitive in a sentence and to tell it from a prepositional phrase.
Section A gives eight sentences (They decided to leave early; My goal is to win the race) and asks students to write the infinitive in each. The reference box teaches the idea with ‘to learn’, ‘to read’, and ‘to rest’, infinitives not reused as Section A answers.
Section B asks students to define an infinitive, name its two parts, build a sentence with ‘to dance’, and explain how an infinitive differs from a prepositional phrase that starts with ‘to’. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill builds toward understanding verbals and phrases.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and stress the test: ‘to’ + a verb is an infinitive, ‘to’ + a noun is a prepositional phrase.
Complete Section A independently – have students underline ‘to’ and the verb that follows it.
Work Section B item 12 together: contrast ‘to read’ (infinitive) with ‘to the library’ (prepositional phrase).
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
Pair with the Gerunds Worksheet or the Prepositional Phrases Worksheet for a phrases mini-unit.
